I think about this, wondering how I might have won him over. I believe he came for the premise, but bounced off the game-as-conversation approach of Apocalypse World 1E. I prompted, cued, and checked in with him several times. He'd respond but 'turtle up' when it came to doing stuff. My best guess is he was more comfortable with traditional RPGs, the player-centric/facing options of AW was a bridge too far!
