Good Monday, Gamer!
"Why so serious?" – Joker, Chaos Mage.
I've been at this hobby long enough to know what sparks joy for me. I know what piques my curiosity, pulls me into a game, or makes an event memorable. I also know what I'm not into and that my gaming weekends are numbered (thanks for that, Paul!).
I enjoy exposing folks to new games that get me excited. I love playing crunchy, complex games with people who enjoy digging into the mechanics, revisiting old classics to see how they hold up, and, of course, reuniting with friends to swap stories of past campaigns and argue over who was more right—Scott or Mags.
My approach to running games has changed over the years, from fifth-grade AD&D sessions to running sandbox campaigns like The One Ring – Moria. But at the end of the day, it's all about having fun. We could choose a thousand other ways to spend our time, but we’re here rolling dice and playing elf games because it’s what we love.
Yes, there’s work involved—it’s a hobby, after all. There are skills to improve, techniques to learn, and games to master. It’s the pursuit of fun that keeps us going. And while fun is subjective, we don’t have to love the same games to recognize others are having a blast. Freemarket, for instance—not my cup of Joe, but I see the joy it brings to those who play it, and that’s what matters.
Throw dice and have fun.
As 2024 winds down, I’m hoping to squeeze in games of Outgunned and Urban Shadows 2nd Edition. It’s going to be tight! I’ve pushed Invisible Sun into 2025, as that feels like a solid 6-8 session commitment.
What games do you still have on your list for this year? Will you beat the clock?
